SUMMARY:Speaker - Emily Major - Australian Rotary Health
DESCRIPTION:Join us when we hear from Emily Major Australian Rotary Health Researcher – below is a little about Emily. \nI have always been passionate about making a difference in the lives of people living with chronic disease\, and I feel the best way of doing so is through research. Over the past 5 years\, I have pursued a career in scientific research\, developing my knowledge and skills as a scientist and researcher. \nGrowing up in regional Victoria\, the opportunities to explore science is limited. The first science program I was involved in was the Rotary’s National Youth Science Forum. In my last year of high school\, I was accepted to take part in the National Youth Science Forum\, participating in the Brisbane session at the University of Queensland. I was then chosen to be apart of a small group of 9 participants to attend the international session at the University of Singapore. These experiences encouraged me to pursue a career in science. \nIn 2021\, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine and decided to continue my studies\, focusing on kidney diseases. My honours project is focused on polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and is trying to understand how the immune system influences disease progression. Through my research I hope to find a therapeutic solution which could potentially improve the quality of life of patients with PKD. \n\nMeeting in the Upton Room\, Box Hill RSL\n6:15pm for 6:30pm start\, 7th October\, 2025 \nOr join via Zoom on link on home page\nDinner is available in the RSL Bistro following the meeting.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker - Project Rozana
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we hear from guest Speaker – Rosemary Carrick\, Australian Director of Project Rozana \nRozana was founded in 2013 as a result of a remarkable story of survival. At just four years old\, Palestinian girl Rozana Salawhi fell from the ninth floor of her family’s apartment near Ramallah\, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Her mother\, journalist Maysa Abu Ghannam\, arranged for Rozana’s treatment at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem\, believing that her chances of survival were higher in Israel’s healthcare system.\nRozana’s story inspired prominent Australian businessman Ron Finkel AM to shed light on the significant healthcare disparities between Israel and Palestine\, despite their physical proximity. He recognized the potential for healthcare to promote goodwill between Israelis and Palestinians\, and decided it was time to take action.\nRozana aims to address healthcare deficits in the region and leverage the willingness and accessibility of the Israeli healthcare system and its practitioners to support their Palestinian colleagues. By improving healthcare for Palestinians\, Rozana also seeks to create positive dialogue and cultivate empathy between Israelis and Palestinians. \nMeeting in the Upton Room\, Box Hill RSL\n6pm for 6:15pm start\, 16th April 2024\nDinner is available in the RSL Bistro.\nPlease note non-Rotary club members will need to book separately if they wish to have dinner following the meeting as the venue only sets aside a limited number of seats for members. It is always better to book extras just in case.
